How sex is presented in Middle English literature?
In university, we are studying a very broad selection of English texts from the 1300s to the early 1700s, and notin what continuities and changes in attitudes there were.
Of course, I acknowledge that there are overlaps and so on, and that not everyone in- say- the Restoration period felt the same way about certain topics, but we are trying to consider very general trends.
So... One thing that puzzles me is Medieval attitudes to sex, and how these attitudes are reflected in the literature.
From much of the love poetry we've examined, sexuality seems almost entirely absent, whereas many later poets such as Donne, Marvell, Robert Herrick, Richard Lovelace and so on would discuss sex rather casually.
In Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, there are different attitudes to sex. In the Franklin's Tale having sex is enough to make Dorigen want to commit suicide, whereas some of the other tales are rather bawdy and so on...
Is there any sort of way you could describe the "general" middle English attitude towards sex? (although I realise that this might be impossible... I only ask for it in very broad terms)

Sex was really not the object of discussion back then, so it makes sense that it was not commonly mentioned in literature. For the most part, any mention of it was strictly taboo, and most people pretended that sex was not something people wanted to do, it was something that must be done. They saw it as very hedonistic and unbecoming.
